The Steam Machine is back. And it's a good benchmark for what a dedicated gaming PC can do at the same price.
Valve's new console runs a semi-custom APU — the same class of chip you'd find in a PlayStation or Xbox. It's sealed. You can't upgrade it. At 1080p you're looking at around 60 FPS in demanding titles. It ships with SteamOS locked in, and the warranty covers you for one year.
The PowerGPU Vapor Chamber starts at $1,299.99. It runs a full desktop RX 9060 XT. It hits 120+ FPS at 1080p Ultra. It has a 3-year warranty with U.S.-based support. And it fits in an 18.4-liter chassis with an aluminum carry handle.
Same price range. Very different machine.
What the Vapor Chamber Actually Is
The Vapor Chamber is a small form factor gaming PC, hand-built by the PowerGPU team in Wake Forest, NC. Every unit goes through OCCT Enterprise stress testing before it ships. Not a burn-in checklist — actual enterprise-grade stability testing. If something's wrong, we catch it before you do.
The chassis is 18.4 liters. For reference, that's smaller than most backpacks and comes with a built-in aluminum carry handle. You can take it to a friend's place, plug it into a TV with an Xbox controller, and play exactly like a console. Or set it on your desk and run it as a full Windows 11 Pro workstation. Both are real options.
The internal specs aren't cut-down, console-grade components:
- GPU: AMD RX 9060 XT — 8GB GDDR6, desktop class
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9500F — 6 cores, 12 threads
- RAM: 16GB DDR5-6000 CL36
- Storage: 1TB Gen4 NVMe
- Cooling: 120mm low-profile tower cooler
- Power: 750W 80+ Gold SFX
- Ports: USB-C, 2x USB-A, 3.5mm audio
Standard parts. All of them. That matters because if you want to upgrade the GPU in two years, you can. No proprietary connectors, no sealed enclosure, no voided warranty for opening the side panel.
Real Benchmark Numbers
We don't publish estimated performance. These are actual results from the Vapor Chamber before it ships:
| Game | Resolution | FPS |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1080p Ultra | 97 fps |
| Black Myth: Wukong | 1080p Ultra | 69 fps |
| CS2 | 1080p Competitive | 338 fps |
| Forza Horizon 6 | 1080p Ultra | 76 fps |
For context, the Steam Machine sits around 60 FPS at 1080p in comparable titles. The Vapor Chamber nearly doubles that in Cyberpunk. In CS2 it's not even close.

The Price Point Is the Point
A lot of small form factor PCs at this spec level run $1,500–$1,800 from other builders. The Vapor Chamber comes in at $1,299.99 because we're not marking up factory builds — we're building these in-house, in North Carolina, and selling direct. No middleman, no retail markup, no mystery components.
You also get Affirm financing if you'd rather spread the cost out. Check your rate before you commit — it doesn't affect your credit score to look.
A Note on SteamOS
The Vapor Chamber ships with Windows 11 Pro fully licensed and installed. SteamOS is not pre-installed. If you want to run SteamOS, you can download it directly from Valve and install it yourself — but that's between you and Valve's licensing agreement. PowerGPU doesn't provide SteamOS installation support. What we do support, for three years, is the hardware itself.
Windows 11 Pro runs Steam just fine out of the box. Most people don't need SteamOS to have a great Steam library experience.
Why PowerGPU
We've been building custom PCs since 2018. Every rig that leaves our shop is hand-assembled and stress tested by our team — not a warehouse picker pulling pre-boxed units off a shelf. If something fails in year one, year two, or year three, you call U.S. support and we handle it.
The Vapor Chamber is our first purpose-built console competitor. It's not a rebadged SFF kit. It's a machine we designed around a specific use case: desktop gaming power, in a form factor you can actually move around, at a price that doesn't require a payment plan to survive.
Pre-order is open now. Ships in 1–3 weeks.
